Do you know about
DoGood? They are a Canadian company, (based out of Ottawa, ON) who have developed a browser plug-in that lets you do good!
The plug-in replaces ads on the sites you browse with their own "thoughtful green related initiatives, philanthropic calls for action, and health and wellness ideas". 50% of the profits are then donated to organizations like:
- TED
- Oxfam America
- David Suzuki Foundation
So far, the types of ads I have been getting include
Takeout Without - an initiative to reduce the use of disposable containers when ordering takeout food at restaurants; the
Ethical Fashion Forum - a not for profit network focusing upon social and environmental sustainability in the fashion industry; and an article from
Green Living Online about
the sustainability of Canadian households.
Is It Legal?
Unlike traditional ad-blockers, which cut the HTML of an ad, the DoGooder plug-in does not block original ads from being served and the user always has the option to see the original ad.
Because the ads are manipulated client-side, they are perfectly legal. See:
Why ad-blockers, ad-skippers and other user-control technologies are legal.
The DoGooder plug-in does not collect or share any personal information, either.
I'm loving this plug-in!
